A bill introduced in Indianapolis could require healthcare providers to prove the need for new developments in order to win state approval, The Journal Gazette reports.
What you should know:
1. Healthcare providers would need a certificate of need to build an outpatient surgery center, hospital or other facility costing at least $10 million.
2. Depending on approval requirements, the proposed legislation could have a chilling effect on competition.
3. Proposed healthcare developments in the area include St. Joseph Health's $120 million hospital development. The project could be subject to the CON requirement if construction begins after June 30.
4. The bill was introduced in mid-January and is pending approval.
