HCA vs. Tenet vs. Optum in Q2

Here are 12 things to know from three major health systems and providers who operate ASC chains:

HCA Healthcare (parent company of HCA Surgery Ventures)

1. Revenues for the three months ended June 30 totaled $17.5 billion, up from $15.9 billion in the same quarter last year, while expenses were $15.3 billion, up from $14.1 billion.

2. HCA reported a net income of nearly $1.5 billion in the second quarter of 2024, up from $1.2 billion over the same period in 2023.

3. HCA ended the quarter with 123 ASCs, down from 126 the same quarter last year but up two from the first quarter of 2024.

4. Outpatient revenues made up 38.2% of the group's patient-based earnings in the first quarter, compared with 39.8% in 2023.

Tenet Healthcare (parent company of ASC chain United Surgical Partners International)

1. Tenet Healthcare reported $259 million in second-quarter net income, a 111% year-over-year increase. 

2. Revenue for the period were $5.1 billion, up from $5.08 billion during the same quarter in 2023. 

3. Operating income was $761 million for the second quarter, a 26% increase from $604 million during the same period last year. 

4. USPI's second quarter revenue hit $1.14 billion, a 21.1% increase from the same quarter last year. 

5. USPI's adjusted EBITDA jumped 20.8% from $370 million in the second quarter of 2023 to $447 million in the most recent quarter.

Optum (parent company of ASC chain SCA Health)

1. Optum's operating earnings were $3.9 billion, and its adjusted operating earnings, which exclude costs related to the Change Healthcare cyberattack response, were $4.3 billion.

2. Optum Health's revenue increased 13% over last year, driven by growth in the number of value-based care patients and types of care offered, according to the report. 

3. Optum Insight operating earnings were $550 million and adjusted operating earnings were $940 million.
