The number of hospital systems that own ASCs are on the rise, according to the annual "Hospital Leadership ASC Survey," conducted by ASC expert group Avanza Healthcare Strategies and published Nov. 8.
Here are five statistics to know:
1. Forty-eight percent of respondents said their organization has at least one ASC in 2023, up from 41% in 2019.
2. Forty-seven percent of hospitals and health systems have an affiliation or ownership interest in multiple freestanding ASCs.
3. Sixty-four percent of respondents prefer owning at least 50% of the ASC partnership.
4. Twenty-nine percent said their ASCs were owned solely by hospitals and health systems, an increase from 18% in 2021.
5. Still, 70% of freestanding ASCs are independently owned and operated, according to VMG Health's "Annual Healthcare M&A Report 2022."
