A new project encouraging researchers to "hack" surgical robots at U.S. universities will spur innovation in the robotic surgery field, according to an MSNBC report.
The Raven program received a $1.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to purchase surgical robots and send them to five universities where researchers will modify software, create innovations and share them within the community so researchers can build off each other's work.
The only surgical robot to have FDA approval is the da Vinci robot from Intuitive Surgical, so these robots will not be used on humans, but the innovations from the research could be licensed by a medical robotics companies.
