CMS Targets Unnecessary Medical Technology, Devices

The new CMS pre-reimbursement review program being launched in 11 states next month will target unnecessary medical technology and devices in 15 procedures, according to a MassDevice report.

For the first three to nine months of the three-year test program, medical technology claims will be subject to a pre-payment review before requiring advance permission when the system is fully realized. This is a change from the standard procedure of identifying fraud after the payment has been made. Procedures on the list include spinal fusions, joint replacements and pacemaker and defibrillator surgeries.
