Utah physicians reported Zika may be transmitted through bodily fluids including tears or sweat, according to UPI.
Here are four key notes:
1. A New England Journal of Medicine report details a case in which a 38-year-old man from Salt Lake City may have contracted Zika while caring for an elderly man who died from Zika-related complications.
2. While caring for the elderly man, the 38-year-old came into direct contact with his tears and sweat, and Utah researchers reported that appears to be how he contracted Zika.
3. Prior to this case, Zika was thought to be transmitted via mosquitoes, or in rare cases, through sexual contact.
4. Based on the case, the Utah researchers say more research is needed to examine whether "contact with highly infectious bodily fluids from patients with severe [Zika] infection poses an increased risk of transmission."
