University of Colorado Health nurse read 800 medical records, subsequently fired — 5 insights

University of Colorado Health's Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., fired a nurse for violating patient privacy, according to the Coloradoan.

Here are five insights:

1. By viewing the electronic medical records, the nurse learned patients' names, addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, insurance and care information.

2. The nurse did not see Social Security numbers or financial information.

3. UCHealth sent notification letters to those patients with exposed medical records.

4. The nurse looked at the records "out of personal curiosity," according to the Coloradoan. The nurse was not caring for the affected patients.

5. UCHealth discovered the privacy breach during a normal review of employees.
