The three recipients of the 2018 John M. Eisenberg Award are featured in the Journal on Quality and Patient Safety's July issue.
The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum presented the awards March 12 to recognize providers behind initiatives that promote better care, healthy people and smarter spending.
Here's what you should know:
1. "An Interview with Thomas H. Gallagher" features a Q&A with individual achievement winner Thomas Gallagher, MD. The interview explores Dr. Gallagher's work regarding patients harmed by medical errors as well as communication and resolution programs.
He serves as professor and associate chair at Seattle-based University of Washington School of Medicine, where he is also a professor in the department of bioethics and humanities.
2. The article "We Will Not Compete on Safety: How Children's Hospitals Have Come Together to Hasten Harm Reduction" describes the Columbus, Ohio-based Children's Hospital Solutions for Patient Safety network's efforts to eliminate patient and staff harm.
The article's authors estimate more than 9,000 children have been saved from harm since SPS's network of 130-plus children's hospitals was launched.
3. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health's National Quality Program was recognized for innovation of patient safety and quality at the local level.
LifePoint's Vice President of Quality Karen Frush, MD, helps describe efforts to improve community hospitals' safety culture in the article, "National Quality Program Achieves Improvement in Safety Culture and Reduction in Preventable Harms in Community Hospitals."
4. The July issue also features articles on reducing inpatient preventable death, emotional harm following incidents in healthcare and a quality improvement project improving the timeliness of hospital discharge.
