Pennsylvania's Penn State-Hershey Implements Policies to Address July Effect

Penn State-Hershey (Pa.) Health System has implemented a wide range of policies to combat the July effect, despite some skepticism in the validity of the phenomenon, according to a Patriot-News report.

A study recently published in Annals of Internal Medicine supports the July effect phenomenon, finding hospital mortality rates increase and efficiency decreases during the month as new medical trainees enter the nation's teaching hospitals.

In order to ensure quality doesn't slip during this time of year, Penn State-Hershey enacted several policies, including scheduling more experienced residents during July and August and intensifying supervision of interns during this time. The health system also does not allow new anesthesiologists to enter operating rooms in their first week until they've completed practice on mannequins.
