New York legislation exempts drugstores from some safety and performance standards.

1. Under the new legislation, drugstores are not held to certain standards of credentialing, drug utilization evaluation activities and quality-of-care reviews.
2. These exemptions could result in increased prescription drug costs by $350 million in 2017, according to a new study released by the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association.
3. The study found this number could increase by $5.6 billion over the next 10 years.
4. Another piece of New York legislation, posing barriers for home delivery of traditional and specialty medicines, could negatively impact patient safety.
5. The study found the legislation would also weaken pharmacy network contracts.
