At the 11th Annual Spine, Orthopedic & Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference June 13, Jean Day, RN, director of clinical education at Pinnacle III, discussed the infection prevention regulatory environment for ASCs and tips to stay compliant.
Ms. Day discussed several major areas of infection prevention, including the following:
• Evidence of staff training and demonstrated competence
• Surveillance
• Cleanliness of environment of care
• Reporting to state health departments
• Sharps injury prevention
• Loaner equipment/instruments
• Immediate use steam sterilization
Ms. Day also noted some changes in infection prevention regulations, including surgical site infection surveillance. She urged providers to read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2013 paper on SSI surveillance changes for its National Healthcare Safety Network, available here.
