Healthmark Industries, which develops products for the sterilization, decontamination, storage and security of surgical instruments and other medical devices and accessories, has announced the availability of Humipak, which extends the holding time of soiled instruments.
The product is intended to help facilities ensure soiled instruments remain moist if decontamination of the instruments cannot begin within 30 minutes, according to a company news release. Instrument manufacturers, AAMI and AORN recommend decontamination begin within 30 minuets so organic soils, particularly blood, do not dry.
The Humipak consists of a layer of highly absorbent material sandwiched between two layers of water proof film, according to the release. To use it, facilities place individual instruments, or an entire instrument tray, inside the Humipak, add a specified amount of water to the absorbent layer and seal with a peel away adhesive strip. This process creates a watertight, moist atmosphere that is intended to prevent organics from drying over an extended period of time. Testing has demonstrated that items will remain moist for up to three days, depending upon the type of instruments and the exact composition of the residue.
Humipaks are available in three sizes: double height tray, full tray and half tray dimensions.
