Experiencing burnout? 5 insights into other careers

With physician burnout rates increasing, a panel of speakers discussed career alternatives at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting, April 21 to April 27 in Los Angeles, Medscape reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. There is a wide array of career alternatives available for neurologists feeling burned out.

2. Neurologist Heidi Moawad, MD, pursued a nonclinical career in consulting, teaching and writing. She said nonclinical careers offer opportunities to develop leadership skills and technological innovation.

3. Some potential careers include: hospital leadership, medical affairs, pharmaceuticals, government work and medical education and communications.

4. During the meeting, David Jones, MD, spoke about how he left his practice to join the FDA. With the FDA, he now works to improve treatment options for Americans with multiple sclerosis and has more time to spend with his family. While Dr. Jones enjoys his position, he hasn't ruled out returning to practice.

5. Article author Andrew Wilner, MD, was the final panelist. Dr. Wilner began a nonclinical career as a medical journalist.
