Patients at dialysis treatment centers in Colorado suffered a total of 664 vascular access infections from April 2010-March 2011, amounting to an overall vascular access infection rate of 1.8 per 100 hemodialysis patients, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
Fifty-nine reporting dialysis treatment centers saw 37,335 patients during this time period. These patients include 26,270 with fistulas, 4,593 with grafts, 5,162 with permanent central lines and 1,310 with temporary central lines.
Of the 664 vascular access infections, 404 were local access infections and 260 were access-related bloodstream infections. The rate of local access infections and access-related bloodstream infections were 1.1 infections and 0.7 per 100 hemodialysis patients, respectively. Patients with permanent central lines had the highest rates of infection, while patients with fistulas had the lowest rates.
