CMS: Insulin Pens Should Only Be Used on One Patient

A CMS letter to its state survey agency directors reiterates that insulin pens should only be used on a single patient.

According to the letter, CMS has received reports that some providers may be reusing insulin pens for more than one patient. The letter indicates that any healthcare provider using insulin pens should review the following FDA recommendations:

• Insulin pens containing multiple doses of insulin are meant for single patient/resident use only, and must never be used for more than one person, even when the needle is changed;
• Insulin pens must be clearly labeled with the patient/resident’s name or other identifiers to verify that the correct pen is used on the correct patient/resident; and
• Healthcare facilities should review their policies and procedures and educate their staff regarding safe use of insulin pens.
