The New York State Senate and New York State Assembly have passed legislation that requires central service technicians to be certified and undergo continuing education credits, according to an International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management release.
Central service technicians are responsible for ensuring that instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected and sterilized prior to patient use.
Proponents of the bill argue continuing education can improve patient safety and infection control. New Jersey is currently the sole state in the nation to require certification, but legislation has been introduced in Pennsylvania.
