Patient satisfaction is increasingly dictating physicians' ratings, and ultimately their reputation.
Huffington Post detailed 10 key ways physicians can improve patient satisfaction.
Here are 10 strategies:
1. Express geniality. Smile a warm smile as opposed to a wide grin.
2. Speak low and slow. When you first see a patient, speak in a lower voice and slower. Patients are more receptive when you move slowly and use fewer and lower hand gestures to convey warmth.
3. Address the patient by name. Whenever possible, look directly at the patient to maintain eye contact.
4. Shake hands. Do whatever feels natural for that specific patient, whether that is shaking hands or a light tap on the shoulder.
5. Mirror the patient. A strong way to connect with someone is to mirror positive behavior. Therefore, if a patient tends to move quickly and speak quickly, exhibit this same behavior as it seems more familiar to the patient.
6. Limit the distractions. Have a plain background behind you so the patient focuses on your interaction.
7. Dress well. Consider your clothing as this may either drive or deter patient satisfaction. Patterned clothing may distract your patients and they may forget crucial details of your conversation.
8. Pay attention to detail. Listen to all of your patients' comments and repeat what they said to make sure you fully understand. Avoid paraphrasing in your own language.
9. Provide positive reinforcement. Compliment the patient on positive behavior such as medication compliance.
10. The power of three. Patients are often not satisfied with the treatment option they select if they feel overwhelmed. Therefore, provide three or less treatment options to patients.
