Why this surgeon is excited for AI to disrupt healthcare

The use of artificial intelligence has become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially in healthcare.

Sean Moroze, MD, an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Ascension Medical Group Sacred Heart Bay Orthopedics in Panama City, Fla., connected with Becker's to discuss the healthcare disruptors he is most excited about.

Note: This response has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Dr. Sean Moroze: In the coming years, we will see an unprecedented technological evolution that will disrupt how we practice and deliver healthcare. This evolution will primarily revolve around the increase in artificial intelligence and its integration into every facet of patient care. AI can streamline care by reducing physician administrative burden, improving diagnostic accuracy, eliminating redundancy and minimizing physician errors. The introduction of AI into electronic medical records will occur piecemeal, with often undetectable change. However, in the coming decade, such technology will be commonplace and come to be expected by physicians and other providers.

Additionally, this AI/technological revolution will be hastened by the appearance of nontraditional healthcare corporations in everyday medicine, namely Google, Apple and Microsoft. These corporations, often seen as disruptors themselves, will bring new ideas and technologies into patient care and population health. The question will be whether or not these companies and technologies can improve outcomes without increasing costs. Nonetheless, the future of healthcare is bright, with AI and nontraditional corporations offering new advances to enhance our patients' health while reducing costs.
