WHO pushes for oversight of AI in healthcare

The World Health Organization released updated guidance for the use of large multi-modal models, a form of artificial intelligence with multiple potential uses in healthcare.

Platforms such as ChatGPT use large multi-modal models, which are able to accept data such as text or images and generate responses not limited to the type of data provided, according to a Jan. 17 news release from the WHO.

Popular applications of this in healthcare are for the diagnosis and clinical care, such as responding to patient questions and administrative tasks such as documenting and summarizing patient visits within EHRs.

"Generative AI technologies have the potential to improve healthcare, but only if those who develop, regulate and use these technologies identify and fully account for the associated risks," Jeremy Farrar, PhD, the WHO's chief scientist, said in the release.

The organization recommends that governments and health systems invest in the development of such systems, that they develop laws, policies and regulations for AI's use, and that frequent audits of the technology be implemented, according to the release.
