About 22.8 million people have been disenrolled from Medicaid as of June 4, according to data from KFF.
KFF has been tracking Medicaid enrollment since May 3, 2023, after the continuous enrollment requirement enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic ended March 31, 2023. The tracker uses information from state websites and CMS.
Here are 10 notes on the Medicaid disenrollments for ASC leaders:
1. More than 94 million people were enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program in March 2023.
2. KFF estimated last year that between 7.8 million and 24.4 million people could lose Medicaid coverage during the 12-month unwinding period.
3. Approximately 49.6 million people have had their coverage renewed so far.
4. There are still renewals waiting for 21.8 million people.
5. KFF noted that its dashboard undercounts the actual number of disenrollments to date due to lags for when states report data.
6. KFF reported a wide variation in disenrollment rates across reporting states, which could be attributed to early renewal targets and differences in renewal policies and system capacity.
7. Texas has disenrolled 2.1 million people so far, the most of any state.
8. California and Florida are tied for the second most disenrollments at 1.8 million,
9. California has also renewed coverage for 6.9 million people, the most of any state.
10. Across all states with available data, 69% of all people disenrolled had their coverage terminated for procedural reasons, which can include people who did not complete the renewal process.
