Urologist pay grew by $133,000 in the last five years, whereas pay for emergency medicine specialists — the specialty with the smallest growth — increased by only $2,000, according to data from Medscape's "Physician Compensation Report" for 2023 and 2018.
Urologists earned an average of $373,000 in 2018. In 2023, that figure grew to $506,000, an increase of 36 percent. This was the highest five-year salary increase among 29 specialties, which ranged from the next-highest increase of $118,000 to only $2,000.
Here are three notes on changes in urology in the last five years:
1. Fifty-eight percent of urologists surveyed in 2023 indicated they feel fairly compensated, compared to 51 percent in 2018.
2. Women accounted for 17 percent of urologists in 2018, compared to 13 percent in 2023.
3. In 2018, 90 percent of urologists indicated they would choose the same specialty again, if given the chance to go back. In 2023, 96 percent reported they would.
