A number of companies are banking on a hybrid office-based lab/ASC model as the next frontier in ASC development, OR Manager reports.
Proponents say these hybrid structures offer a financial advantage for providers — thanks to recent reimbursement updates — while benefiting patients and insurers. At least 120 OBLs in the country have converted to ASCs, according to OR Manager.
Four companies leaning in to the hybrid OBL/ASC model:
1. Incline Village, Nev.-based Ambulatory Systems Development has established hybrid facilities at five sites and aims to establish five more locations. The company is led by CEO Robert Zasa.
2. ACA Cardiovascular, which is also based in Incline Village, Nev., has 12 hybrid OBL/ASC facilities in development. Marc Toth serves as CEO.
3. Cardiovascular Centers of America in St. Louis, which is led by CEO Tim Price, aims to establish the hybrid model in around 30 centers in the next three years. About 10 would be de novo centers.
4. Since pioneering the hybrid OBL/ASC model in 2007, Edina, Minn.-based National Cardiovascular Partners has built, acquired and grown 26 outpatient surgery centers in seven states. NCP is a division of Fresenius Medical Care North America.
