Louisiana is the top-paying state for surgeons in the U.S. according to data published April 25 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The 10 states where surgeons receive the highest pay: 

  1. Louisiana: $534,920
  2. Maine: $450,330
  3. Montana: $435,940
  4. North Carolina: $429,010
  5. Hawaii: $415,390
  6. Kentucky: $389,700
  7. Utah: $381,020
  8. Kansas: $374,300
  9. West Virginia: $365,560
  10. Pennsylvania: $363,270
