Robert Marvin, MD, is the first surgeon in Houston to offer patients the FDA-approved ReShape procedure, an effective and safe way to lose weight.
Here are five takeaways:
1. Robert Marvin, MD, recently added Houston-based Southwest Free Surgical Center, affiliated with Nobilis Health, as a patient care resource.
2. Prior to the Gastric Balloon, patients had two options for weight loss — medical weight loss and surgery. Dr. Marvin encourages the ReShape procedure as it is more effective than medical weight loss and less risky than surgery.
3. Surgeons place the Gastric Balloon into the patient's stomach using a flexible endoscope with a general anesthetic, and then fill the balloon to an amount based on the patient's characteristics. After surgeons fill the balloon, they remove the scope.
4. The minimally invasive procedure allows patients to go home within two hours of the procedure.
5. Before undergoing the procedure, Dr. Marvin will place patients in a program, which he directs. The program includes a comprehensive medical assessment, consultation with a registered dietician and an appointment with an exercise specialist. Dr. Marvin and other specialists will see patients at regular intervals for assessment and ongoing education.
