Physician vs. administrator pay

Here are six things to know about physician and administrator compensation:

1. Primary care physicians earned an average of $242,000 in 2021, according to Physicians Thrive's 2022 "Physician Compensation Report." Specialists earned an average of $344,000.

2. Here are the 10 highest-earning average annual physician specialties by compensation, according to Doximity's "2023 Physician Compensation Report." 

  • Neurosurgeons: $788,313
  • Thoracic surgeons: $706,775 
  • Orthopedic surgeons: $624,043 
  • Plastic surgeons: $571,373 
  • Vascular surgeons: $557,632 
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgeons: $556,642 
  • Radiation oncologists: $547,026 
  • Cardiologists: $544,201 
  • Urologists: $505,745 
  • Radiologists: $503,564 

3. Nationally, medical practice administrators on average make $101,340 per year, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10 percent earned fewer than $60,780 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $205,620.

4. Here are the average salaries of administrators, based on practice setting, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data:

  • Hospitals: $119,450
  • Government facilities: $117,000
  • Outpatient care centers: $99,540
  • Offices of physicians: $98,230
  • Nursing and residential care facilities: $83,550

5. Average physician compensation declined by 2.4 percent in 2022, compared to a 3.8 percent increase in 2021, according to the Doximity report.
