A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found more than half of physicians (54.4 percent) reported having at least one indication of burnout. The American Medical Association has focused on understanding the root cause of burnout and ways to prevent physicians from falling prey to this common problem.
• Demanding workload
• Number of nights on call
• A partner who is also a physician
• Having children to raise
• Recently making a medical error
• Conflicts between work and home
• Being midway through their career
• Spending less than 20 percent of their time on meaningful aspects of work
How to build resistance to burnout
• Consider how priorities, feelings and actions affect stress and burnout
• Create a personal mission statement
• Begin a gratitude journal
• Turn to peers for support
• Learn something new
• Record inspiring patient stories
