The Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society supports CMS' proposal to eliminate requirements that every patient have a comprehensive medical history and physical examination 30 days before surgery in an ASC.
The society also supports CMS' proposal to provisions requiring ASCs have a written transfer agreement with a hospital, as well as its proposal to ensure all physicians employed by the ASC have admitting privileges at a hospital.
Instead of all patients requiring an H&P examination before surgery, ASCs would be required to create and implement a policy identifying patients who require the assessment before surgery.
CMS said the transfer agreement policy is "duplicative of other regulatory requirements," like the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.
