Twenty percent of physicians are considered "engaged," according to a new athenahealth physician engagement and leadership index survey. Mobile medical app Epocrates conducted the 2,000-physican survey.
Here are five takeaways:
1. Half of surveyed physicians reported they would not recommend becoming physicians.
2. Nearly half (46 percent) of surveyed physicians experienced burnout in 2015.
3. Thirty-two percent of physicians who think their organization is run by other physicians are engaged, while only 8 percent of physicians who think their organization is not physician-run are engaged.
4. Physician-owned medical groups experience a higher ate of engagement (32 percent), compared to medical groups owned by health systems (17 percent) or hospitals (14 percent).
5. The study found three factors spurring physician engagement:
- Leadership satisfaction: Physicians seek physician leaders who communicate and empathize.
- Physician and non-physician executive trust: Strong communication between physicians and non-physicians executives greatly enhances physician engagement. Leaders who present an organization's mission and transparently develop plans to achieve this vision will spur engagement.
- Supportive workplace design: Those physicians who work in environments where they are equipped to deliver quality care demonstrated fourfold engagement over the total physician sample.
