Thomas A. LaVeist, PhD, plans to improve health disparities for African Americans, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. In February 2016, Dr. LaVeist will start his role as the department chair of health policy and management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Here are five things to note:
1. Dr. LaVeist previously served as the director of the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions in Baltimore. He was also a health policy professor at Johns Hopkins University.
2. He has researched the socioeconomic and racial disparities that affect health in communities, with a focus on African Americans.
3. He writes on the topic for publications and is working on a documentary highlighting the health disparities between races.
4. Dr. LaVeist plans to take his research to policymakers, hoping to incite change.
5. He obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
