How physicians are using AI

While the jury is still out on the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, that has not stopped some physicians from taking advantage of its uses for tasks including recordkeeping, patient communications and clinical research, according to Medscape's 2023 "Physicians and AI Report," published Oct. 30. 

While about 42% of physicians are enthusiastic about AI's uses in the healthcare workplace, the majority feel neutral, or even apprehensive, about its uses. 

Despite hesitancies within the field, AI is already in use at some practices. 

Here are the top 11 ways physicians are using artificial intelligence right now: 

Researching conditions: 13% 

Electronic health records: 10% 

Office administrative tasks: 10% 

Patient scheduling: 9% 

Staff scheduling: 8% 

Summarizing a patient's EHR before the visit: 8% 

Patient communications: 7%

Diagnosing conditions: 7% 

Using exam room conversations to generate clinical notes: 6% 

Predicting a patient's prognosis: 5% 

Treating patients: 5%
