Due to the lack of available residencies, Florida is expected to face a shortage of up to 7,000 physicians by 2025, according to jacksonville.com.
Here are five highlights:
1. Florida is set to graduate nearly 100 more students from medical school in 2015 than can be accommodated by available residency slots in the states.
2. Florida has 19 physicians in training per 100,000 population. In comparison, New York has 82 medical residents and Massachusetts has 84 medical residents per 100,000 population.
3. Sixty-two percent of Florida physicians are 50 years old or older.
4. In the next five years, 13.4 percent of Florida physicians plan to retire.
5. While telemedicine may serve as a viable tool to combat the physician shortage, Florida requires a physician to make a face-to-face meeting with a patient before the physician can prescribe medication for that patient.
