The FBI reported the agency will investigate a half-billion dollar healthcare fraud scheme involving pain management creams, according to Fortune.
Here are five highlights:
1. The investigation targets creams marketed at athletes and the elderly as a means to alleviate pain and cramping.
2. The agency is investigating claims that some of the creams lack medical value and pharmacies are overbilling Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers.
3. Investigators are looking into claims the pharmacies sent patients more pills than they ordered or refilled prescriptions without being asked.
4. Various companies have charged more than $10,000 for a single tube of ointment.
5. The FBI has not filed any charges yet as the investigations are still in the early stages.
