Employed vs. self-employed: Who has higher job satisfaction levels? 6 survey findings

Medscape's Employed Doctors Report 2016 found employed physicians reported nearly comparable levels of job satisfaction to their self-employed counterparts, 55 percent and 63 percent, respectively.

Here are six survey findings:

•    Thirty-five percent of all physicians reported they most disliked limited influence in the decision-making process, such as management of a patient's cost of care, with 28 percent citing limited control over work and their schedules as primary reasons they dislike their career.

•    When switching from self-employment to employment, 40 percent of now-employed physicians noted a satisfaction improvement following the switch. On the other hand, 71 percent of self-employed physicians had an increase in satisfaction after switching from being employed.

•    Thirty-eight percent of employed physicians are paid straight salary, while 37 percent are paid base salary plus productivity targets. Only 18 percent of employed physicians were paid base salary plus productivity target in addition to ladder over and above productivity targets.

•    More employed physicians (38 percent) were satisfied with their income than self-employed physicians (36 percent). Of employed physicians, 16 percent reported being very satisfied, slightly below their self-employed counterparts (17 percent).

•    Most employed physicians (35 percent) had to work on call between five nights and 10 nights.

•    Thirty-seven percent of employed physicians reported being occasionally pressured to make patient care decisions they disagreed with, while 28 percent said they never felt this way.
