The implementation of an EHR in an ophthalmology practice had no significant impact on revenue or productivity, according to a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology.
Researchers conducted a retrospective case-control study comparing the pre-EHR and post-EHR time periods at the Cole Eye Institute in Cleveland. A total of 28,161 patient encounters were identified in both time periods.
According to the study:
• There was no significant change in total net fiscal revenue between the periods.
• There was no significant change in patient volume or revenue per visit volume.
• The volume of diagnostic tests and procedures billed was unchanged after EHR conversion.
• However, overall use of eye codes declined by 15.7 percent; and use of eye and evaluation and management codes increased by 14.7 percent after the implementation.
