We recently sat down with Carol Stanfill, Vice President, US Ambulatory Surgery Centers, DePuy Synthes, the orthopaedics company of Johnson & Johnson.
Carol leads the ambulatory surgery team, covering ASC sales, marketing and innovations. Together, we discussed the below topics – and more – as they relate to the current state of the ASC market. (Listen to the full podcast episode here.)
Advances over the past decade
There have been many changes in outpatient care – especially free-standing ASCs – over the last decade. There’s excitement around how digital technology, including robotics, provided by companies like DePuy Synthes, continues to rapidly shape the future of healthcare across multiple orthopaedic specialties in the hospital and outpatient settings alike – helping patients prepare for surgery, helping promote efficiencies and helping to facilitate post-op follow-up.
Growth opportunities in the market
More surgeries are moving to the ASC setting and they’re expected to continue. The growth in the ASC channel, driven by the aging population looking to keep up an active lifestyle; advances in technology and pain management to allow for joint procedures in the outpatient setting; and Medicare, coupled with the lower cost of ASCs, are all significant drivers supporting the growth of outpatient surgeries.
The future of ASCs
In an ASC, managing volume with efficiency is key to minimizing the burdens on surgeons and their teams. As healthcare facilities emerge from COVID-19, administrators are faced with the challenge of maximizing resources to prepare for the future.
