Emergency medicine physicians are the most burned out medical specialists, with over half reporting burnout, according to an Aug. 29 American Medical Association report.
The report is based on a 2022 survey, which received more than 13,000 responses from physician and nonphysician providers across 30 states and more than 70 health systems.
Six physician specialties with the highest burnout rates, and the percentage of burned out practitioners:
1. Emergency medicine: 62 percent
2. Hospital medicine: 59 percent
3. Family medicine: 58 percent
4. Pediatrics: 55 percent
5. Obstetrics and gynecology: 54 percent
6. Internal medicine: 52 percent
