Here are five of the most important questions you should ask physicians you are considering recruiting for your ASC.
1. Are you selectively or actively looking for a job? Why?
Gaining an understanding of the candidate's position early on helps the recruiter and employer understand the candidate's current position and desire for a change in employment. This information gives the recruiter/employer a general understanding of the candidate's time frame for a job change in addition to his or her reason for the job search and motivation level.
2. Are you willing to relocate?
Location, location, location. It is very important when interviewing to understand whether or not candidates are willing to relocate (if they are not from the immediate vicinity) and would be excited about the prospect of doing so for the opportunity to work at your ASC. Other reasons candidates might want to relocate include family and lifestyle, and if these are weighted much more heavily than succeeding and growing in the position at your facility, ignoring these possible red flags can be a very costly expense.
3. What type of salary/compensation structure are you in search of?
Although not always the number one reason for accepting a position, salary and compensation are important to understand. Conducting research on geographical salary benchmarks is important prior to recruiting a physician. Also, the employer must be clear as to what the facility can and cannot afford.
4. Why do you think you would be a good fit for this position?
It is important to learn from candidates their rationale for why they are the best individual for the job. This question gives candidates an opportunity for the employer/recruiter to learn more about the style in which they think along with both short- and long-term goals. This element is crucial in the decision-making process.
5. What is your ultimate motivation in searching for a job?
Last, but not least, before hiring physicians, you want to know what motivates them. There is no right or wrong answer here; however, you need to know what drives them. This will give you insight into how they will fit into the culture of the ASC in addition to their long-term goals.
