5 key design points on Memorial Sloan Kettering's new Josie Robertson Surgery Center

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is creating a freestanding outpatient surgery center in Manhattan, the Josie Robertson Surgery Center, according to a Healthcare Design Magazine report.

Here are five key notes:

1. MSK replaced traditional open recovery rooms with private rooms in the center to meet patient needs and reduce the number of transfers and hand-offs.

2. The center's layout is in a "figure-eight" design with space in the center where patients and staff mingle and family members have a place to eat.

3. They applied principles of hospitality to the surgery center space so it was comfortable for patients, caregivers and staff. They wanted a spa-like aesthetic in the recovery rooms.

4. The project was designed vertically instead of horizontally due to the real estate options in Manhattan. The building was stacked for maximized organization and transparency.

5. The surgery center is expected to open in the third quarter next year.
