4 trends in healthcare cost & technology

The technology physicians and surgeons use can affect the cost of care significantly, according to a report in Hospitals & Health Networks.

Here are four key notes:

1. Around 40 percent to 50 percent of the annual healthcare cost increases are related to new technologies or greater use of old technologies, according to the report.

2. Americans are beginning to use telemedicine for video consults, with millions expected to use health apps on their smartphones for diagnoses.

3. There were 41 new pharmaceutical agents in 2014 with 22 percent designated as "breakthrough therapies."

4. Clinicians are beginning to work in virtual health centers to oversee patients in various locations. Alternative payment methods and database tools allow them to manage their patients.
