4 surgical robots approved in 2023

The use of robots in surgical procedures can provide many benefits, such as improved accuracy and precision, shorter downtime for patients and increased efficiency. As more ASCs incorporate surgical robots into their practices, some leaders say they are essential to success going forward.

Here are four surgical robots that were approved for use in 2023 for ASCs to know:

1. Corin Group earned FDA 510(k) clearance for its Apollo robotic platform and software for total knee replacements. The system uses Corin Group's BalanceBot technology, which is designed to help achieve personalized dynamic balance for patients.

2. Orthopedic robot developer Think Surgical earned special FDA 510(k) clearance for its TMINI miniature robotic system for use with implants from three additional implant manufacturers. It was initially approved for use with a single manufacturer in April. TMINI includes a wireless robotic handpiece that helps surgeons perform total knee replacements.

3. Levita Magnetics received FDA clearance for its MARS platform, a minimally invasive surgical platform aimed at the high-volume abdominal surgery market. Physicians at Cleveland Clinic performed the US' first minimally invasive gastric sleeve procedure with the magnetic surgical robot at its Digestive Disease Institute.

4. Proprio earned 510(k) clearance from the FDA for Paradigm, its surgical navigation platform. The system uses light field technology in spine surgery navigation by creating a 3D rendering of the patient's anatomy and the surgical site, according to a company news release.
