Here are 10 surgery center industry leaders who impact the outpatient community with their medical work, company leadership or facility administration.
1. Brian Cole of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. Brian Cole, MD, MBA, is a professor in the department of orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He is also the head of the Orthopedics Master's Program and section head of the Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush. He has been the chairman of surgery at Rush Oak Park Hospital since 2011. Dr. Cole is an international lecturer and has developed several techniques for shoulder, elbow and knee treatments. He has published more then 1,000 articles and five textbooks on orthopedics.
2. Susan Charkin of Healthcenters. Susan Charkin, MPH, is the founder and president of Healthcents, a Salinas, Calif.-based medical provider contracting company, where she helps healthcare providers and ambulatory surgery centers negotiate favorable reimbursements and contracts with HMOs, PPOs, worker's compensation organizations and other payors. She brings to her company more than 15 years of experience in senior contracting positions with major commercial payors, including Blue Cross of California, Blue Shield of California and Aetna.
3. Holly Carnell of McGuireWoods. Holly Carnell is an associate with the McGuireWoods law firm in Chicago, where her practice focuses on corporate healthcare transactional work and regulatory matters. Ms. Carnell works largely with healthcare systems, hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers to counsel them on compliance matters and transaction structures. She is well-versed in HIPAA privacy rules, the HITECH Act and electronic health record legal issues.
4. Dotty Bollinger of Laser Spine Institute. Dotty Bollinger currently serves as COO of Laser Spine Institute, a leader in minimally invasive spine surgery. She first joined LSI in 2008 as vice president of quality and compliance. As COO, Ms. Bollinger has established processes and procedures that have improved the efficiency of care at LSI facilities, including its surgical centers in Tampa, Fla., Scottsdale, Ariz., Philadelphia and Oklahoma City. She is also responsible for overseeing medical operations at LSI and played an instrumental role in the implementation of electronic health records.
5. Dr. David Abraham of Reading Neck & Spine Center. David Abraham, MD, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, is a physician at the Reading Neck and Spine Center in Wyomissing, Pa. He offers operative and nonoperative surgical care as well as post-surgical services for spine patients. Dr. Abraham completed his undergraduate education at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and his medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. His clinical interest is in minimally invasive spinal procedures, and he has performed more than 10,000 spine surgeries throughout his career. Prior to founding DISC, Dr. Bray founded The Institute for Spinal Disorders at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He also served as director of neurosurgery and headed spinal programs at St. John's Medical Center, Century City Hospital and Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital. Since DISC's opening in 2006, it has become the official provider of medical care for U.S. Olympic athletes and Red Bull North America athletes, as well as the Los Angeles Kings. The FDA began collecting the fees Oct. 1. The fees will help ensure the FDA has the ongoing ability to approve effective and affordable generic medications.
