10 practices, hospitals & facilities shutter in 10 days

Here are 10 hospitals, physician practices and health facilities that have announced plans to close, according to Becker's reported between July 30 and Aug. 8:

-- On Sept. 29, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta plans to close its Atlanta-based Egleston Hospital and transition patients and services to its new Arthur M. Blank Hospital. Roughly 340 patients are expected to be transported to the new Atlanta-based hospital using 56 ambulances and Children's Healthcare's ground and air transport.

-- MercyOne announced its plans to close a hospital in Primghar, Iowa, by Sept. 30. The hospital, MercyOne Primghar Medical Center, will close as MercyOne works to reorganize care in the area amid economic challenges.

Additionally, MercyOne, owned by Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, will consolidate MercyOne Paulina Family Medicine and MercyOne Sutherland Family medicine with Primghar Family Medicine.

-- Auburn (N.Y.) Cardiology Associates is closing its doors after nearly four decades following the retirement of owner and head physician Rama Godishala, MD. The practice will permanently close its doors Sept. 30, and until then is only seeing patients for pre-surgery and follow-up appointments. The closure will limit cardiac care options in Auburn, with patients having to travel to Geneva, Ithaca or Syracuse, N.Y., for the closest cardiology practices.

-- Northern Light Health will close its internal medicine facility in Dexter, Maine, on Sept. 30. A spokesperson for the health system told Becker's "the building no longer meets our standards for a patient care facility," and it will consolidate its resources into other health centers. Affected clinicians and staff will be offered positions at nearby Northern Light locations. The system said it operates four practices within 15 miles and seven practices within 25 miles of the Dexter facility.

-- U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez approved the closure of Dallas-based Steward Health Care's two Massachusetts hospitals, Boston-based Carney Hospital and Ayer-based Nashoba Valley Medical Center, by Aug. 31.
