Phenelle Segal, RN, CIC, president of Infection Control Consulting Services based in Blue Bell, Pa., has nearly 30 years of experience in infection prevention and control. ICCS, which was started in 2005, assists healthcare organizations in developing, implementing and maintaining facility-specific infection prevention and control programs. The company also offers educational programs for healthcare professionals on infection control and compliance topics.
Prior to founding ICCS, Ms. Segal served as an infection control manager at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital in Malvern, Pa., for one year and as the director of infection control at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center Los Angeles for 14 years. Ms. Segal also led the State of Pennsylvania's mandatory Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory panel.
In addition to offering her expert insight and opinions to numerous Becker's ASC Review articles, Ms. Segal also helps moderate topics, including best practices for cleaning and sterilization, in a blog dedicated to the ophthalmic surgical community. "It is imperative that ASCs look at developing and maintaining safe practices for patients before they are inspected [by regulatory bodies]. Being proactive in today's environment will serve the facilities well and with stellar practices in place, they reduce the risk of being cited," she said in an interview with Becker's ASC Review.
