Jeffrey Simmons is the chief development officer for Regent Surgical Health, an ASC management and development company in Westchester, Ill. He is responsible for overseeing all acquisition and development efforts for the company.
Mr. Simmons brings more than 25 years of professional healthcare experience, beginning with his role as vice president of marketing for American Medical International, where he managed business development for 18 hospitals. He then served as CEO of two specialty hospitals and as associate CEO of a full service acute care hospital.
Mr. Simmons was also the founder and CEO of the Immune Suppressed Institute, a physician management company servicing HIV patients, and the founder and executive vice president of IntensiCare, a venture-financed hospitalist company. Mr. Simmons received his bachelor's degree from La Salle College in Philadelphia and his master's degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore.
In an interview with Becker's ASC Review, Mr. Simmons discussed the process of forming an ASC joint venture with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. He said he believes the academic medical center's ASC will benefit from the presence of a management company, which can provide expertise in ASC operations that a hospital might lack. "Our job is to get the doctors in and out of the facility as quickly as possible so they can either go back to their clinic or to whatever other pursuits they have," he said. "Companies like ours are in business to make the experience for the doctors more efficient, the turnover times less and the scheduling easier."
Mr. Simmons said other processes, including equipment requests, should be easier when Regent is managing the surgery center. "Previously, the doctors had to go through hospital committees and compete with other hospital needs," he said. "This is a separate business entity that will make its own capital decisions."
