Which US state experienced a drop in health insurance premiums? — 5 things to know

A Freedom Partners analysis found Mississippi was the only state in the United States to see a drop in health insurance premiums on the individual marketplace last year, according to Mississippi Watchdog.org.

Here are five things to know:

1. The state saw a 0.2 percent decrease in health insurance premiums.

2. Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney said the drop is due to competition and a previous medical loss ratio mess.

3. In 2017, United Health Care will stop selling plans on the federal exchanges, which will impact rates due to decreased competition.

4. Commissioner Chaney also is allowing the practice of selling transition plans that do not meet all of the ACA requirements. Alabama is one of 35 states allowing these types of plans.

5. Tennessee, Minnesota, Alaska and Hawaii had increases of 30 percent or more in 2015.
