A Virginia panel is in the process of discussing ideas for a state-run health insurance exchange, while Gov. Bob McDonnell continues his opposition to the federal healthcare overhaul, according to a Roanoke report.
Virginia continues to move forward in the process of establishing a health insurance exchange, despite the fact that the state has joined others in challenging the constitutionality of the reform law. Gov. McDonnell won't say yet if Virginia should establish a state-run health insurance exchange or allow the federal government to take over the process.
Virginia has already mostly spent a $1 million federal planning grant to begin the work of setting up an exchange. An advisory council spent nearly a year researching the details of a state-run exchange, agreeing that the process should not be left to the federal government.
Gov. McDonnell sent the council's recommendations to the leaders of the Virginia General Assembly last week, along with a letter that stated his opposition to the federal healthcare reform law while also opposing federal intrusion into state business.
