Only 30% of consumers shop for healthcare services: 4 things to know

A HealthMine survey found 70 percent of consumers do not compare medical services or pharmaceutical drug prices. HealthMine surveyed 750 consumers enrolled in wellness programs.

Here are four things to know:

1. Merely 29 percent of health plan sponsors offered consumers a price comparison tool.

2. In the survey, 42 percent of consumers said having a price comparison tool in their wellness program was "very important," while 48 percent said a tool would be nice to have.

3. Forty-one percent of consumers said they do not compare costs before scheduling services because their payers absorbed the cost, "so it doesn't matter."

4. The survey found of those consumers who did report comparing healthcare prices, most use the telephone to compare prices as opposed to an online tool.
