Minnesota Receives $4.2M Grant to Establish Health Insurance Exchange

Gov. Mark Dayton announced today that Minnesota has received a $4.2 million grant to further the planning and establishment of a health insurance exchange, according to a Hometown Source report.

The funding will be administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce to assist with exchange development, technical infrastructure and stakeholder work groups. According to Gov. Dayton, the funding will help the state provide better healthcare at lower costs for all Minnesota residents. The state has made "good progress" in designing a health exchange that will place Minnesota at the forefront of healthcare reform, he said.

States have until Jan. 1, 2013, to set up their own health insurance exchanges, which will be available to individuals starting in 2014. If states do not meet the 2013 deadline, the federal government will step in and set up the health insurance exchange for them.
