Partners HealthCare Acquires Boston Non-Profit Insurer

Partners HealthCare System, the largest hospital and physicians network in Massachusetts, has signed a letter of intent to acquire Neighborhood Health Plan, a non-profit insurer with more than 240,000 beneficiaries in the state, according to a Boston Globe report.

The deal would put the Boston-based healthcare system into the health insurance business. Partners would contribute an unspecified sum to fund grants for more than 50 community health centers affiliated with Neighborhood Health.

The two parties plan to finalize a definitive agreement by late Oct. 2011. The agreement would then require approval by state and federal regulators, including Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Massachusetts Division of Insurance and the U.S. Department of Justice.
