ICD-10 Could Cause Healthcare Reimbursements to Take a Hit

Providers who are not prepared for the ICD-10 transition may see their bottom lines suffer, according to a MediGain report. The Healthcare Billing and Management Association recently stressed the importance of being prepared for the change to ICD-10's more granular code set. Holly Louie, chair of the organization's ICD-10/5010 committee, testified before Congress that the economic stability of the country's healthcare reimbursement system is hinging upon this successful switch.

Administrators at physician practices and surgery centers first need to analyze exactly how ICD-10 will impact their facility and what areas of the revenue cycle are most at risk for complications. Documentation and coding audits can help pinpoint gaps in the ICD-9 documentation system.
